"Hello, World!"
a code made by Brian Kernighan. When the code works, these words pop up. When I first imagined this scenario, it made me feel wholesome. The person who completed the sequence must have felt so happy when they saw these words pop up on the screen. I took inspiration from this and turned it into my FMP project title: Hello Me., to aim for the enlightenment, gratification, and understanding when I finish this project and learn something new about myself and see it with my own eyes.
My project concept is:
-conversation
-self reflection
-therapy
-connect
I came up with this subject when I was looking through my notes from visiting exhibitions. I came across a question from visiting the National Portrait Gallery and it said,
"A portrait is a conversation between an artist and the person. Then what kind of conversation would I have with myself if I were to draw a self portrait?"
It prompted me to reflect on this year and many things happened, and I believe that I've changed into a different person in such a short time. I believe this experinence is something worth sharing and although the subject is something personal, through my research, I was able to get some ideas on how to make that idea communicate to the general public.
I also had a recent event that also prompted me to focus on self reflection, which was on New Years. I went with a group of five other friends to go see the New Years fireworks. Eventually, some friends went home because they were too tired carrying their heavy shopping bags, and at the last minute, I was left by myself on Southwark Bridge because a friend had underdressed. But I stayed until the last minute and was able to see the whole of the New Year's fireworks.
After the night, I wrote a short email to my family members along the lines of what I've achieved this year and that I was having a fun time in London. The response I got were all positive and it gave me confidence and a sense of reassurance that I was making progress in my life.
It was an emotional event, and I think it was one turning point in my life. I definitely want to make this event into a piece of work that more people can connect with.
One of my favourite form of art I came across while doing research was this promotion film by Jonas Lindstroem. He created a promotion film for Sephora, a makeup brand. I was able to get some hints about advertisement and promotion.
Basically get a message that applies to people related to the aim of the company. In Sephora's terms that would probably be something like:
-support beauty
-empower people though beauty
-beauty is good
-makeup is good
The film's message was that beauty changes thought out generations, and it shows it visually pleasingly. It promotes Sephora by showing the range of who they support and how makeup is there for every stage of womanhood.
This typography piece really struck my heart. It is a typeface designed by Morten Halvorsen where he traced his mother's handwriting, who is also battling Parkinson's disease. His motive was to immortalise his mother's handwriting, which can be scribbly because of the disease, which affects the nervous system and makes stable movement difficult. He made a template in which other people can do the same: immortalise other's handwritings. From this I can feel a narrative of love and compassion. But sharing that experience of keeping a loved one's handwriting makes it a valid Graphic Design work.
My action plan for this week is to further do research and specify what kind of route I will take. I plan to go to the library to organise information and to look at books and art books to get information and inspiration. I plan to go to galleries and museums as well to get information and inspiration on what kind of method I could consider using for my conclusion.
